A motif can be painted with 8, 16, 24 or 32 colours. Fewer colours give you larger fields and a graphic, poster-like picture; more colours give you softer transitions and a longer evening at the table. You make that decision before anything is traced, and you can see what it does.
The greyscales are mixed. The colours are drawn up.
All 48 greyscales are real paint today. The 512 standard colours are fully designed and numbered, and the crowdfunding campaign pays to have them produced professionally.
